Hailed as "the Michelangelo of yoga" and considered to be one of the most important masters in the world, B.K.S. Iyengar is credited with bringing the ancient art of yoga to the modern masses. Born in Southern India 100 years ago, the legendary guru is the founder of Iyengar Yoga, a form of Hatha known for its rigorous mental and spiritual focus. Filmed before he passed away in 2014, this intimate portrait centres on Iyengar's legacy and teachings, while illuminating the life-changing holistic methods at the core of his practice. Openings, tractions and traditional postures sequenced to remove stiffness, stress and fatigue and build strength, vibrancy, steadiness and joy. This workshop will be based on Sharoni's training in France with Faeq and Corine Biria. All levels welcome.

Marlene Mawhinney has been teaching yoga since 1969. She holds an Iyengar Intermediate Senior Level III Certificate. Marlene has travelled regularly to Pune, India since 1985 to study with her teacher, BKS Iyengar. At Yoga Centre Toronto, where Marlene is President and Senior Teacher, she works with many people with health challenges. Marlene has developed and oversees yoga programs for MS, back care, heart disease, fertility and other special needs. She has been training teachers in Canada for many years. Marlene's focus is on yoga for health and well-being - in both body and spirit.
 
For teachers and students with at least one year of practice with a recognized Iyengar yoga teacher plus experience with headstand and shoulder stand.

Home Practice Tips

Beginning a home practice is the best way to prolong the work you have done in class. Coming to class 2-3 times a week is ideal and adding in practice at home is extremely beneficial for your progression.  ••• This week's home practice pose.  Ardha Uttanasana. Practice this asana twice each day. Hold for 30 seconds each time.  This pose can be practiced pretty much anywhere. If you don't have a counter-top or table to use, place your finger-tips on a wall instead. It works your legs, arms and creates excellent mobility in the spine.  Benefits: Increases flexibility in the front chest and armpit area. Increases strength in the back chest and shoulders. Relieves tension in shoulders and back. Rejuvenates spinal muscles. Increases lung capacity. Lengthens hamstrings. Strengths quadriceps.  Always seek advice from a certified Iyengar yoga teacher. Please email us if you have questions: deanna@calgaryiyengaryoga.com
